Conversation in my household with my almost three years old sometimes goes like… Mum, I want French fries for dinner. Well, don’t get it twisted young lady, we call that thing “chips” here in the UK. Thanks, YouTube, for teaching my child the American version of everything. She is the only person that calls soft (carbonated) drink soda. Kids hey!

Making your own perfect chips in the oven at home from scratch is pretty easy and fuss free too. While you may not get the little ones to help you with making this chips recipe because of sharp knives, they will love helping out in adding the spices and mixing.

Once you learn to make it yourself, you will say goodbye to store-bought forever. You are probably thinking store-bought frozen chips are convenient. Yes, that is true but they are also packed full of preservatives, contains oil and other ingredients you may not be able to pronounce.

How to make homemade oven chips

Start by giving the spuds a good wash so it is dirt free. You can also peel the potatoes if you want but it is not needed for this recipe. Potato skins have some nutrients that are great for the body.

Preheat the oven at 200C/400F for a fan oven and 220C/425F for a conventional oven. Prepare a baking tray by lining it with a baking sheet or parchment paper. You can omit the liner if you have a non-stick baking pan.

Cut the potatoes into desired sizes, I cut mine to about 1 cm thick. Make it thicker for chunkier chips and don’t cut it too thin as it would burn or becomes soggy.

cut potatoes in a bowl.

Add the sliced potatoes to a bowl and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and spread the potatoes on a kitchen towel in a single layer, take another kitchen towel and pat the potatoes dry. This stage is important for a crispy result.

Add the potatoes back to a bowl and season with Cajun spice, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper and vegetable oil. Toss to combine making sure the potatoes are well coated.

Spread the seasoned potatoes unto the baking tray in a single layer, place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes.

Bring it out of the oven, turn the fries, return it to the oven and cook for additional 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown and crisp on the outside.

Be careful when handling the fries at this point as it would be hot. Transfer to a plate, serve immediately and enjoy!
