How to make summer fruit salad recipe in simple and easy steps. These fruits are in season, they are fresh, colourful, juicy and delicious. The fruit salad dressing made with just 3 ingredients is everything and more.

Perfect for all occasions especially in the hot sunny weather where there is BBQs, potlucks, house parties and get-togethers alike.

The best fruit salad recipe (summer fruit salad)

A little bit of bragging here but allow me to introduce to you the best fruit salad recipe of all time. Your perfect summer fruit salad recipe! Even your fussiest eater would not say no to this deliciousness.

Truth be told, this is hardly a recipe but you can still be guided on how to pair the fruits and the best fruit salad dressing to use.

No right or wrong on the quantity or amount of fruits to use to, go with your heart and you will be just fine. This recipe is great for kids and adults!

    Honey Lemon Dressing

Most of the recipe online or in recipe books use honey lime dressing but I love to use lemon and honey as my fruit salad dressing. I am honestly partial to lemon and it is easily sourced, unlike lime.

Also, there is no time I don’t have some lemons laying about on my countertop.  I love to add it to my morning smoothies, homemade juice like this cucumber juice and honey and lemon drink. You won’t be disappointed if you gave this honey lemon dressing a try. The three ingredients in my dressing are lemon juice, lemon zest and honey.

Do not serve this honey lemon dressing to children under one.

a hand held dressing in a bowl.

    Fruit salad ingredients

Strawberries: They are in season in abundance and very affordable

    Honey

    Lemon zest

    Fresh lemon juice

Red grapes: please ensure you slice the grape lengthwise and not width-wise. You may be serving kids this salad and one thing you need to avoid is a choking accident. you can also use green grapes for this recipe.

Kiwi: make sure the kiwi fruit you go for is ripe and ready to be eaten otherwise, it would be hard and sour. In other words, do not buy “ripen at home” for this recipe.

Orange: I love the hint of citrus flavour it gives the overall summer salad. For reasons I really can’t explain, I tend to only use 1 or 2 at most in this recipe. The small quantity used balances the recipe very well.

Honeydew melon: I believe this and watermelon is a must in every summer fruit salad recipe. They are naturally sweet and when left to sit for a while produces its own juice which would also enhance the flavours and freshness of the salad.

Pineapple: I used 1 small pineapple for this recipe and that yielded about 2 cups. It is important you go for a ripe pineapple. Here are few ways to know if your pineapple is ripe and how to pick the right one for your salad.

a bowl of fruit with spoon.

How to tell a ripe pineapple

A ripe pineapple should almost be soft to touch, firm but not squishy

Another way is to pull the fronds. If it pulls out easily then the pineapple is ripe.

Lastly, do a smell test, the bottom of a ripe pineapple should smell sweet and fresh. No foul smell, then you are good to go.

a bowl of chopped strawberries, melon and kiwi.

    Few fruit salad ideas

Here are other fruits you can use or add to your salad, they are not limited to this but these are some of my other go-to. Mix and match using contrasting fruit colours.

Mango: use ripe but firm mangoes

Banana: I tend to stay away from this fruit because it can go mushy quickly and change colour too which may make the overall look of the salad not appealing enough. You want your salad to steal the show right! If you must add bananas, add them just before serving the salad

    Blueberries

Blackberries or any type of berries

    Peaches

    Cherries

    Satsumas, peeled and segmented

How to make fruit salad (summer fruit salad)

Prep the fruits: Wash the fruits properly before use. Cut and chop individual fruits into small manageable sizes. Try to cut them evenly if you can so the salad looks very appealing and beautiful. Add the fruits to a large bowl and set aside.

Make the honey lime dressing: to a small bowl, add honey, fresh lemon juice, zest of one lemon and mix to combine to form a light syrup. Taste and adjust to suit you, but do not let it be too sweet. You can swap the honey for maple syrup, brown sugar or coconut sugar to make this recipe vegetarian and vegan.

Mix and chill: Pour the honey lemon dressing over the fruits and mix to combine. Cover the salad with a cling film and chill for at least 1 hours. That way the flavours of the fruits would have developed and the dressing would have married the salad perfectly.

Serve and enjoy! You can also garnish with mint leaves. I forgot to add this recipe.

    Tips

Make sure you use any fresh fruits for optimum result.

Swap the lemon juice for lime juice

Do you want creamy fruit salad? Then leave out the lemon honey dressing in this recipe and use cool whip, cream cheese or yogurt instead.

For healthier salad, make this salad without the dressing but let the fruit sits in its own juice for better taste and flavour.

    How to store fruit salad

Your fruit salad would remain fresh in the fridge for up to 48 hours depending on the types of fruits used. I personally wouldn’t store them longer than that time especially if it contains dressing.

No, you cannot freeze fruit salad.
