Shamrock Shake Recipe
If you love Aeros peppermint chocolate, then you will love Shamrock shake. It is minty, creamy, velvety, rich but not too sweet. This delicious milkshake is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any day you want to feel lucky or treat yourself to something special because you deserve one.

I recently tried the newly launched Shamrock Shake from McDonald’s (UK), and I have to admit, I was a bit underwhelmed. The mint flavor was barely there, almost as if they played it too safe with the taste. The colour was pale too, where is the green? Here, we’re all about bold mint flavors and color!
Let me show you how to make a homemade Shamrock Shake that’s even better. This recipe is my take on how a great milkshake should taste.
Today, in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, we’re making a classic, vibrant green, minty shake. With just a few simple ingredients, you can recreate this festive treat at home anytime, turning a limited-edition favorite into an everyday delight.
Why you will love this recipe
- You can make this classic drink at home in under 5 minutes any time of the year. There is no need to wait until it is on sale at McDonald’s. You can now enjoy it all year round.
- Affordable treat to make at home, especially when making it for the family.
- Refreshing, delicious and easily customizable

What you will need
Vanilla ice cream: Alternatively, use plain ice cream and vanilla essence, which is what I did for this recipe
Whole milk
Green food grade coloring
Mint extract: This is not the same as peppermint. However, it can be used interchangeably if you can’t find the former. You can also use mint sugar syrup.
Mint leaves: This is optional and you will only need a few for this shake. I used it in order to intensify the mint flavor.
Whipped cream for topping

- Add chocolate chips or a mint chocolate chip

- ⅓ teaspoon Mint extract sub 1 Tablespoon mint sugar syrup.
- 4 Mint leaves This is optional only use if using mint sugar syrup

- Fresh mint leaves to garnish
Instructions

Notes
- My food coloring is from Aldi (It’s not the best in terms of color pigmentation). After some testing, I found that 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons achieve the best hue. If you are using other brands you are not familiar with, start with 3-4 drops and adjust it to suit your preference.
- If using plain icecream add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to it before blending

Love the idea of adding extra mint
Thank you so much, Carm.
I love how simple yet festive this shake is! The combination of mint and vanilla is always so refreshing, and the color makes it perfect for St. Patrick’s Day. I appreciate that this version uses real ingredients instead of artificial flavors. Do you think it would still turn out well with a non-dairy ice cream, or would that change the texture too much? Either way, I’m excited to try making this at home!
Thank you, Annie! I haven’t tried it with non-dairy ice cream, but I believe it should work just fine. The texture might not be quite as smooth as it would be with dairy ice cream, but it will still taste absolutely delicious.
