This hearty, savoury mince is the classic British comfort food, perfect for a busy weeknight. Quick and easy to prepare, it comes together in just one pan and is ready to serve in under 40 minutes.
If you are looking for an easy dinner option that is affordable but delicious, then this is it. It is a super satisfying dinner the whole family will enjoy!
I rarely meal prep or batch cook, but when I do, this savoury beef mince is one of my go-to. It makes a great base for many dishes throughout the week.
I could make a giant meat pie with it like the one I served with my creamy mushy peas, bolognese sauce, pasta bake or even cottage pie. This recipe has got me all the time, plus it is a perfect winter recipe.
Why you will love it
- Minimal Prep: the only hard work here is the process of chopping the onion and garlic, which literally takes 3 minutes.
- Meal prep friendly and highly versatile
- High protein and veggie-packed
- Freezer friendly
- Economical
What you will need
Beef mince: I love to use 10%-15% fat content for this recipe as it yields a more flavorful and delicious mince.
Frozen veg: I used a combination of mixed veg and frozen peas
Onion
Garlic
Mixed herbs: This is sold in every supermarket in the UK. I used the one from Aldi, which is made with a combination of marjoram, basil, thyme, and oregano. You can also substitute it with Italian seasoning.
OXO Beef stock cubes
Tomato puree
Worcester sauce: this adds depth to the sauce
Olive oil
All-purpose flour
Red pepper flakes
dried thyme
Salt and black pepper
How to make savoury mince
Heat olive oil in a skillet on medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the chopped onions and garlic and saute until soft and fragrant, stirring intermittently so the garlic doesn't burn.
Add beef mince, break it up in the skillet, and cook until almost brown, then season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Continue to cook until the mince is fully browned.
Crumble the OXO cubes (or any other beef stock) to the beef, add the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mixed herbs, and thyme, and stir to combine.
Sprinkle the flour over the seasoned beef and stir to combine. The flour will help thicken the sauce.
Add the frozen vegetables, then pour in about 1-1/12 cups of water (or beef broth) and stir to combine. Reduce heat to medium-low, and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes. This will allow the flavors to develop and the sauce to thicken slightly (you should have a gravy consistency with the sauce).
Taste and adjust the seasoning accordingly. Remove from the heat and serve over rice, pasta or mashed potatoes.
Storing leftovers
Store leftover savory beef mince in an airtight container for up to 4 days. It would last up to 5 days in the fridge if kept under the right temperature, but I tend not to store cooked food in the fridge past 4 days just to be safe. You can also freeze it.
To reheat, simply reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop (easiest method) and heat until piping hot.

Hi Ajoke,
You are a lady after my own heart. This recipe is practically identical to the recipe that I “made up” years ago except you use a time saving thing that I have never considered before. Frozen veg!
I make a huge batch to freeze in portions. Every portion can be a completely different meal to the last. Bolognaise one day, Chilli con carne, just by adding a tin of kidney beans and some chillis. Cottage pie…the list is endless.
Thankyou for sharing.
I will spend more time on the freezer aisle in future!
Paul:-)
