How to make egg fried rice like Chinese takeaway

If you are looking for an easy and delicious rice recipe, this egg fried rice is it! This dish comes together quickly, 5 minutes and you are done, more importantly, it is made in one pan and packed with flavor.

When I order takeaway either Chinese or Indian, I never order rice because I can quickly whip it up while I wait for the rest of my takeaway. It is super easy to make at home and healthy too as you can control the ingredients that go into it. Once you learn to make this Chinese takeaway side dish recipe at home, you will find yourself making it over and over again.

I didn't use Chinese 5-spice for this recipe as it is the basic egg fried rice and the aim is that you should be able to make it yourself regardless of where you are reading this from. No doubt it adds extra flavor to the rice but it is not a deal breaker if you will be serving the rice with other Chinese dishes.

Chinese 5 spice is often used in traditional Chinese cuisine, so it pairs well with other dishes from the same culture. If you want to add it to your egg fried rice, keep in mind that a little goes a long way, too much and your food will be overpowered by the spices.

This recipe is vegetarian and can be made gluten-free if you swap the soy sauce for a gluten-free version. You can find this in the Asian aisle of your supermarket. Here in the UK, Kikkoman Tamari Gluten Free Soy Sauce is a popular option.

What you will need to make egg fried rice

You only need the following 5 ingredients to make this simple homemade egg fried rice. Please feel free to throw in as much veg as you like just make sure to cook accordingly so that you don't overcook the dish

Cold leftover cooked jasmine rice: this is day-old rice that was cooled and stored in the fridge until needed. Using day-old rice will guarantee that the fried rice is not mushy. You can substitute jasmine rice with long grain rice.

    Eggs

    Vegetable oil

Spring onions, it is also known as green onions or scallions

    Soy sauce

Chinese 5 spice: this is optional and I don't always use it, especially when I am pairing the side with other Chinese dishes is made with the spice already.

Salt to taste: I only used a pinch to season the eggs, you can skip this if you prefer.

How to store leftover egg fried rice

This dish is best served fresh, however, if you have any leftovers, store it in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge for up to 2 days.

    Tips

As I mentioned above, you can easily customize this recipe to suit your need or with whatever veggies you have in your fridge.

    • Swap the eggs for shrimp, shredded beef, pork, or diced chicken.
    • To make this dish spicy, stir fry with red chili pepper or red pepper flakes.
    • For a low-carb option, swap rice for cauliflower rice, and make sure to follow the same procedure so that the cauliflower doesn't turn out soggy.
    • If you don't have leftover rice, you can cook the rice as needed and cool it quickly using this method: spread the cooked rice on a baking tray, air dry for 15 minutes and place it in the freezer for another 10-15 minutes until cooled. Alternatively, use store-bought precooked rice if you can't be bothered to cook rice from scratch.
    • If you have leftovers, stir in into sauteed leeks or sauteed broccoli.
