Fancy a quick 20-minute dinner that is colorful and packed full of protein? You will love my version of the canned tuna sushi bowl. The spicy tuna sushi bowl is so good that it will become a regular rotation on your weekly menu.
Sushi bowls are the best way and the closest you can get to having sushi without making sushi rolls. The bowl is packed with all the delicious flavors and textures of your favorite sushi but in a more convenient and customizable way.
The rice is pan-fried until slightly crispy, giving the rice bowl the texture and crunch you can't resist. With canned tuna as the main protein, you can easily whip up this delicious meal anytime you crave Japanese food. It is delicious, kids-approved, economical, easy to prepare, and tastes like the real thing!
Why you will love this recipe
Quick and easy: This rice bowl is fast to make, especially with leftover sushi rice. If you don't have leftovers, you can cook fresh rice in under 20 minutes, leaving you time to prep the other ingredients.
Delicious: The bang bang tuna is the star of this dish. It perfectly balances heat, tanginess, and creaminess in the bowl. Combined with the other components, such as rice, avocado, cucumbers, green onions, and Asian cucumber salad, every bite is bursting with flavor.
Customizable: You can mix and match the recipe's toppings based on your preferences or what you have on hand.
Packed with good nutrients: Tuna is packed with protein, and avocado provides healthy fat. Together with the other components in the bowl, these give your body the much-needed nutrients.
What you will need
Cooked sushi rice: It is already seasoned with rice wine vinegar, sesame oil and a pinch of sugar.
Bang bang sauce: I have a recipe for bang bang sauce on the blog, and it literally comes together in 1 minute. Alternatively, you can use spicy mayo.
Canned tuna: I prefer to use (drained) canned tuna in oil for this recipe
Sriracha sauce: Substitute with any hot sauce you desire.
Furikake: This is an all-purpose Japanese rice seasoning. It can be purchased from supermarkets or on Amazon. Alternatively, use Nori (seaweed)
Avocado slices: For the healthy fat and creaminess.
Spring onion (scallions): A rice bowl without chopped green onions is incomplete. They are one of the best garnishes for a rice bowl.
Olive oil: This is used to sear the rice
Salt and black pepper to taste
How to assemble a good canned tuna sushi bowl
Cook the sushi rice and once it is done, season it with rice wine vinegar, a little sesame oil (optional), and a pinch of sugar while it is warm.
Prepare the toppings: Mix canned tuna with the bang bang sauce in a bowl and set aside. While waiting for the rice to cook, make the salad, slice the avocado and chop green onions.
Pan fry the rice: This step is optional, but once you try it, you won't go back. Place a skillet on medium-high heat, add olive oil, and heat until hot. Add the sushi rice to the skillet and press it down slightly. Let it cook for 3-45 minutes until golden brown. Flip the rice over and let it cook for about a minute, then break it without stirring it too much so it doesn't get soggy. Remove it from the heat and assemble the bowl.
Assemble the bowl: Add the sushi rice to the bowl. Add bang bang tuna to the rice, then any other toppings you desire. Sprinkle the furikake on top of everything. Drizzle the desired amount of Sriracha sauce or spicy mayo over everything. Serve and enjoy.

Can I substitute tuna with salmon
Yes, you can substitute canned tuna for canned salmon. If time is not of the essence, make this Furikake salmon instead.
Do I have to use sushi rice
No, absolutely not. You can use any style of cooked white rice you have on hand. I have used leftover jasmine rice for this recipe, and it's worked a treat every time.
What if I don't want to pan fry the rice
That is absolutely fine as well. It also cut down on the additional calories from the oil. That said, pan-frying the sushi rice (not until burnt but just about golden brown) adds a nice texture and crunch to the bowl.
How to store leftovers
Any leftover sushi rice and its components can be stored separately in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. When ready to eat, reheat the rice in the microwave or on the stovetop before assembling your bowl with fresh toppings.
